The sword is marked for the 18th Ulan rgt and the scabbard is marked for a heavy Cavalry Rgt. The scabbard is the correct type for the sword and may have been with it "for ever". You may find a two digit date on the back spine of the blade near the guard. It is a fairly nice item in my opinion. The heavy issue fighting cavalry swords are much harder to find than the lighter weight dress types for the same period and patterns.

A good many of these (unmarked) went to the USA and were used in the civil war.

        Hi Phild and McCulloh,

        Very interesting!!!

I know that some English and German soldiers had come to Brazil enlisted with Soldiers of Fortune to fight against Paraguay in the Triple Alliance War (1865-70).

I find that it´s the explanation of as came to stop here in Brazil...or some immigrant who came in great German immigrations for Brazil from 1824.

        Regards,

        Ricardo.

Ricardo, very interesting sword, it amazes me to see how often collectors find 19th century and early 20th century German militaria in your area.
          Regards,

          Cesar.
