    Question on Convex EK1

    Hi Guys,

Looking for some info on convex EK1. Were they all private purchase items and did they all contain silver? Currently looking at adding one to my collection but unsure about which to go for. Some pictures of your convex crosses would be a help.

    Thanks for your time.

MOST convex crosses are beleived to be private purchase items. I do not think that anyone would say that ALL were private purchase. Also--not all convex crosses are silver.

BEWARE-- there are alot of fakes out there.

I agree with greg. Many references state (in both World Wars) that vaulted (or convex) crosses were soley private purchases. While this is probably the rule, there were always exceptions.

Also, many "flat" awarded pieces were "hand-vaulted" by the recipient as well. These are usually identified by the "lifting" of the silver beading near the center of the cross. There may also be tell-tale signs of ridged lines on the reverse of the cross.

Have the seller send you a picture of the cross from an angle and also from reverse. this should determine if it is "factory" vaulted.

Also the style of the hinge / pin / and catch will determine if it is a WW1 manufacture or Post WW1 manufacture. These Imperial Crosses were made between WW1 and WW2 as well as during AND post WW2.

      Be careful as said before.

Hi James, this is a silver WW1 period made cross. Maker marked for Paul Meybauer. Very fine finish. It could be for sale if you are interetsed. PM me if you like.
        Cheers, Glenn.

In fact that's a crap picture. I'll try to take a better one when I'm not full of whiskey!

                    Hi There,

Thanks for all the feed back guys. I didn't know that these crosses where faked so much (lucky I asked for assistance before parting with hard earned cash). I don't really collect WW1 stuff but the vaulted EK1's are real nice!!

I had my eye on the following, it's not stamped as far as silver content is concerned.

                    Thanks

                    James

That's a nice looking cross James. I'd buy it. It will not necessarily be silver marked. I have a silver Godet that has no mark but is clearly silver. Looks quite genuine to me. Nice cross.
