1870 cross review

Hi everyone my name is Ken. I am new to this forum. Can I get your opinion on my crosses. I apologize if I am ignorant and not making the crosses by the correct name. Hi Ken,

That is an 1870 Iron Cross 2. Class, or EK2. The "25" oakleaves were added in 1895 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the victory over France. The small bar (called a Wiederholugsspange or WHS) on the ribbon at the top represents a second award of the EK2 during WWI.

The cross itself, and the oakleaves, are authentic. The real value of the set lies in the WHS which, if original, would be very rare and expensive. I think yours is fake but it's hard to say from the photos.

In the first picture it looks like a nine bead fake. The one bead really stands out as a shinny dot. A better close up of the crown would aid in deciding if it is a fake EKII

It's not a 9th bead fake however it also is not the standard Godet/Wagner
type A core. The details in the core are different. Especially noticeable in
the shape of the 0 in the date and the "W".

It's a thin-flange AWS frame and AWS core. I think this combination was used by makers other than (or in addition to?) AWS. In any case it's an original cross.

The WHS is a fake.

Also worth mentioning is that neither case shown here is original to the cross.

I never said the cross was bad. I should have recognized it as a AWS but the
skinny frame threw me off.

The WHS is not good. As Trevor mentioned original examples are very rare.
