    Odd MG Badge

I'm not a collector of these.

But, I have been looking for a Freikorps version with black velvet backing. From what I understand, badges continued to be awarded during the Freikorps period by the MG units within larger Freikorps as well as by smaller, independent specialized MG Freikorps. So, I thought that perhaps this might be one of those.

It is a rather odd looking badge. But, I thought that it might stand a chance, however slim. The card replacement backing seems somewhat convincing. The splints are strange. But, perhaps that's a good thing. The detail is quite crisp. It doesn't seem to fall into the realm of the usual fakes. So....

Could I please get an opinion from someone (like Don, for example) who knows these like the back of their hand?

Thanks Masch19. Your badge has jogged a memory of seeing this badge before. So, I'm more hopeful.

Interesting badge Brian, it looks like it stands a good chance. Did you end up buying it?

No, Mike. It went for $212.50 and it seemed the guy that bought it was pretty determined. I wasn't prepared to go up that high.

The WW1 badges go for a pretty penny, definitely more than $213.00.... who knows what the ceiling was on it... $250? $300, and maybe more? It is in excellent shape and if real, it likely never saw a uniform. I wonder how many of these black backed MGSS badges were cranked out during the FK - early Reichswehr period?
