    Late production Pilot's Badge

    Hi guys.....

    Here's a late production of a Prussian Pilot's Badge.
It's TR era 1941 and later. The pin is stamped L/18.
Certainly not much call for them by that time.
    Enjoy!

          Thanks Don, Greg and Butch...

Here's the specs on this badge.

          Weight............ 22.23 grams
          Height............. 69.67 mm.
          Width.............. 43.31 mm.

          L/18................. B.H. Mayer

I picked this badge up a few years ago at the SOS. Seller said it was marked 800. I thought so too at first glance, the old eyes ain't what they used to be, never expectied an LDO number. A bit different under a glass or when magnified.

Tony, I think you will find this to be a massive Cupal badge. Look at the edges of the badge.

            Here is mine.

              Nice one Don!
Are you sure it's cupal? Any copper showing the sandwich construction?
I also have one like this. Mine is also very light for a massive struck badge. I presume it's aluminum as I have some wear on mine but no indication that it's cupal. Mine is shown in Stephan Previtera's Imperial Skies book as is the L/18 badge.
Great badges. I just love the Imperial aviation badges.

It is cupal. You can see the copper on the highlights. FYI- an aluminum badge requires a coating from another metal to be able to solder the pins/catches to it.

Good point. I'll get mine out to give it a closer look.
                  Thanks!

Here's some pics of mine for comparison. As for cupal ... the copper (?) Seems more like a flash plating rather than a sandwich.
Somewhere in my hoard I have an Imperial EK II by Deschler with a copper plated iron core that is not cupal.
                    Just some thoughts...

That edge is typical for a massive cupal badge.

Terrific looking PBs guys. Cupal used as the material makes a very attractive badge
