    German/Russian badge? help please

    Hi
Can anyone id this badge. Looks russian or German.
It has some markings on the rear which are difficult to make out.The best I can do, is to say that there is a triangle with an R in the middle.Looks like 29 in the top point,U in the left and C in the bottom. Cannot make out left point. There is a circle above the triangle with what looks like a 1 in it
    Thanks

      British Cavalry Badge

      Andy,

At first glance you might think this is Russian, but the style of crown on the top and the thistle motif on the side say otherwise. There was at least one British cavalry regiment that used this design. The loop on the reverse might indicate that it was worn as a device on a cross belt. I would think you would have better luck getting it identified by posting it on the WWI British related website http://1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?showforum=23 .

There are lots of resident experts there.

      Regards,
      Chip

The eagle is definitely "imperial Russian." The hallmarks are also definitely 19th century British. I don't have the reference book handy, but you can tell the precise year it was made from the marking.

Interesting badge, I like the use of the Thissel and english rose with the Imperial Russian eagle. The mark on the reverst is a patent date mark. Ill try looking this up over the weekwnd.

                Hi
Many thanks to all. I am very confused as from your comments this appears to be an English made Russian badge. Is this correct? Also, any ideas as to age or use?
                Regards

                  Hi Andy,

That's a Victorian era British crown on your badge. It also has the classic shamrock, thistle, and rose representing Ireland, Scotland, and England - the UK.

The double headed eagle does appear on a few British badges. The 1st Dragoon Guards comes to mind, but I think it is somewhat different. I would post this in the British forum and I'm pretty sure you'll get an answer.

Here's a (repro) badge I have with a "Queen Victoria" crown.
