Here is a commercial postcard of the old battleship "Kaiser Wilhelm II," marked by then Marinezahlmeisteraspirant (Paymaster Officer Candidate Warrant Officer) August Böning, who served as ship's paymaster from 5 August 1914 to 6 February 1915. Note he has circled the porthole that was his quarters, and indicated his battle station in the top of the foremast!

I guess "Paymeister Officer Candidates" were considered expendable during battle considering how exposed his battle station was. I hope he had a strong stomach during drills. I bet the sweep of the mast way up there during a heavy sea was quite something.

    Thanks,

Here's another one, a Central Powers joint parade view taken out an upper story window. Not quite "Where's Waldo?"-- but only because the sender, Stefan, reported "I'm at far left, second platoon, 6th from the end."

Very interesting topic Rick-it got me looking at some of my old PC's. I usually don't pay much attention to the writing as that turn of the century German script, though quite beautiful, looks like sanskrit to me. I found one ( commercial portrait card of Pinz Adalbert in naval uniform) that was sent from the SMS OSTFRIESLAND in 1916. If only I could read it.......
