    3rd Infantry Helmet

Last week, a co-worker brought this helmet in for me to see. It belonged to his grandfather whose name was Leroy Dye. He also was known to sign his name as Lee Roy Dye. Although the helmet itself gives a lot of information, my friend would like to learn more about his grandfather's service time. Would any of our learned members be able to help us find out more information about Mr. Dye?
I've taken several pictures of the helmet for you to view. Also any ideas as to approximate value? The helmet is a family keepsake and definately not for sale. Thanks in advance for your help & comments.

Unable to make out the writing on this. Would I be correct in assuming some association with the 45th Infantry Division?
