I've bought this one from an old collector.
Very good condition with a lot of original feldgrau on it.
The black color seems to be a blued metal Under the paint.

Curious to know if these trench armor items could actualy stop a 303 cal round

depended on the distance and the angle as well as the material the bullet was made of. These were mostly intended to protect from artillery and grenade fragments and were sometimes worn on the back when the front was protected leaning against trench wall.

To try to answer your question based on what I have read of the German's testing these would not stop an AP full rifle round straight on at a couple of hundred meters or closer.......in most cases.

I agree very cool, and rare to find. With the body pressed against the trench wall and this armor on backwards and with the rear skit of the helmet covering the back of the neck it could really save a person from air burst shraplnel
