    August vs Augustus

    This may seem like an odd question but its been bugging me and I can't figure it out. Is it Frederick 'Augustus' or Frederick 'August'??? When in reference to the medal I usually always see 'August' but in encyclopedias (atleast mine) it says 'Augustus'. I also see variations of Frederick as well. I usually see Friedrich with 'August' and Frederick with 'Augustus'. Im guessing this is a German vs English way of spelling the name. All info would be appreciated as well as any good books/websites where I can find info on both FA III and FA I.

    Best Regards,

    Cole

    Sorry forgot to add that when I said if anybody knew any good books or websites I meant the F.A. Kings of Saxony not the Kings of Poland. Thanks.

      You need to speak with Stoggieman (Rick). Be patient, he'll be along.

        Teuton, your guess is correct. Friedrich August is the German way, Frederick Augustus is the English translation. Not unlike Wilhelm(German)=William(English), or Ludwig(German)=Louis(English). Wish they'd keep the names in the German form - it would clear up a lot of confusion. And sorry, don't know any info on them. All the best,

          You can add the Latin Fredericus Augustus to the confusion too. That pretty well disappeared at the end of the 18th century, but Augustus seems to pop up now and then. For consistency it's Friedrich August auf Deutsch and Frederick August in English.

                Ach, these Americans! Tsk, tsk, tsk. Everything has to change.

                Nürnberg is Nuremberg
                München is Munich
                Köln is Cologne
                Friedrich is Frederick
                Bretzel is Pretzel.........

                What about:

                New York -> Neujork
                Washington -> Waschstadt
                Los Angeles -> Engelheim

                Would that make you happy?

                Hey, leave your guns in your holsters, just kidding

                Cheers, Frank H.
