    Baltic Cross

I'm now on the hunt for a Baltic Cross and I need some info. Detlev's got one which shows a rivet on each horizontal arm. Another one I'm looking at has no rivets.
Anyone care to comment on rivets or lack thereof? Or any special points I should look out for on repro'd BCs?
    Thanks,
    Eric Gaumann

I'd like to know too, since--strangely enough--this is one of the "common" awards that I have never ended up with!

My instinctive reaction is that I don't particularly care for this painted (?) one piece cross: but whether it's a 1930s S&L or a 1990s who-knows-what, I can't tell. I would suspect the latter, since the "wear" pattern appears quite unnatural-- filed (?!) on the reverse, and hand worn around the edges on front, the odd tings and scratchies on front-- but "wear" along the lower edges of the inner outer arms and NOT as would be normal on the fleurs de lys and the raised gold cross....

This is an image of a cross that Detlev has or had.

Eric, this one looks like a 1957 piece for me. It has the typical Steinhauer & Lück pinback. I'll post a pic of another badge with this pinback in a few minutes.

Yes, same pinback like that 1957 Imperial Navy Pilots Badge made by S&L!

                      ugh....

S&L ought to be ashamed of themselves. No offence, but that badge makes me wanna puke.
                      Thanks,

                          RE: 1957??

                          Hmmmm...
This looks like a slightly better version of the one I mentioned in February and everybody said "yuck" about. It was painted and lacked the rivets. 1957 you say? Probably-but not "original" enough for me.
                          I don't like it.
                          Cheers,
                          JeMc

                            hinges

Jeff, can you post a link to that February thread you mentioned? I can't seem to find through the search engine.
I'm trying to compare this BK's hinge to my '57 EK1. It's the same basic design: a squished sheperd's crook-shaped pin pivoting on a small barrel pin held in place by the hinge assembly itself. It's like a figure "8" with a flat bottom (that's affixed to the reverse of the medal itself). This BK has a solid hinge portion while my '57 EK1 has a hollow hinge assembly. The first image I posted shows most of what I'm talking about. The hinge assembly on this BK seems to be of a lot better quality than the only '57 piece I've seen.
                            Whattaya say?
                            Thanks,
                            Eric Gaumann

                              November 2001

I have a PM from Rick regarding the erstwhile Baltenyuck piece from 11/25/2001. perhaps the thread is still there.
I note another "57" Baltic cross similar to this one is on sale presently at ebay.
                              Cheers,
