    Schwarzburg-Sonderhausen

    Dear forumites,

I would like to show you a recent purchase of mine: a Fürstlich Scharzburgisches Ehrenkreuz 4. Klasse mit Eichenbruch.

Here is the standarte of the prince of this tiny state in Central Germany:

Map of the Saxonian Duchies (in yellow the principality of Schwarzburg-Sonderhausen):

A brief description of this principality (sorry only in German, but very interesting):

    http://www.deutsche-schutzgebiete.de...dershausen.htm

Stimmen im Bundesrat / representants in parlament of the the German federation: 1
    Capital : Sondershausen - 7 500 inhabitants (1905)
    Size (square kilometers): 862,1 km²
    Einwohner / Inhabitants:
    • 1871: 67 191
    • 1875: 67 480
    • 1880: 71 107
    • 1905: 85 177
Klima / Climate : Mild (my note: for German standards!!! )
Gewässer / Rivers: Von Wipper und Ilm durchflossen.

A very scarce order, considering the size of this principality... I would like to see such order on a medal bar... maybe one day...

    Ciao,

    Claudio

First time I see such award!

Nice Christmas present from Claudio to Mr. Ortelli

    Jani
    - Military historian and dealer from Finland.
    - Collecting Finnish awards, German EK1's 1939, KVK1's w/o swords and Tirolian shooting badges.
I still need EK1's L/14 Screwback and Pinback.

Yes, Jani... these are the best presents you can get... from yourself! You can't go wrong...

      Ciao,

      Claudio

        A very nice piece.

The 4.Class with Swords still remains on my list of Iron Cross equivalents of the German states. Maybe someday.

BTW, it's Sondershausen. I dropped that S on my web site a couple of times, too.

          Hi Dave!

Nice to have you here... Actually I tried to get the 4 class with swords during that auction, but I wasn't lucky enough... I guess lots of people are after the sexier (& rarer) version of such orders with swords! Starting price was 300 Euros, ending price plus 23% fee was 450 Euros, just in order to give you an idea of the market value in Germany of such medal...

About the exact spelling of Sondershausen you're totally right... even if I am speaking German as foreigner it does sound wrong to me... to many "s"... German is really a quite strange language... especially for an Italian speaking person like me. Thank you for pointing it out.

          Ciao,

          Claudio

The ones with the oak sprigs are actually rarer than the ones with swords, but, yeah, swords are "sexier." My collecting focus, of course, is the awards to combat soldiers, so I would take a 4th class with swords given to a fighter over a 1st or 2nd class given to a princeling.

If the dollar would have strengthened against the euro, I would have been at the auctions myself.

Here is one with swords on a bar. Not mine as I was too poor to win it. This was part of a group that got split up and it really made me sad. If there is a problem with me posting this picture let me know and I will pull it as it does not belong to me.

                Claudio, a couple more notes:

                1. The reason we know yours is from Sondershausen is the cipher on the reverse. For Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt it was "FG" (Fürst Friedrich Günther) and for Schwarzburg-Sondershausen it was "GFC" (Fürst Günther Friedrich Carl).

                2. Your badge is actually the 3rd Class. The 4th Class had no enamel at all:

                The classes were:

1st Class: neck badge, enamel arms and enamel medallion
2nd Class: breast badge, enamel arms and enamel medallion
3rd Class: breast badge, silver arms and enamel medallion
4th Class: breast badge, silver arms and silver medallion

                3. Like the Fürstlich Reussisches Ehrenkreuz, the 3rd Class was what lieutenants typically got. The 4th Class was for senior NCO, warrant officer and officer candidate types (Offizier-Stellvertreter, Zahlmeister, etc.).
