    1870 EK2 - stepped core

    Hi All,
Sorry, at present I don't have pics to show but I don't think I'd be able to get ones that would show this feature in any case.
Some time ago I purchased a rather nice 1870 EK2 and one thing I noticed with it is that it has a stepped core.
What's the story with the stepped core? Did all 1870 EK2s have stepped cores or was this attributed to a particular maker. I have a later produced 1870 EK2 and it certainly does not have a stepped core (I believe my other one was made around the time of the jubilee or perhaps early 1900's).
It is an obviously sandcast piece and my favourite EK2 - scans and pics just don't do these things justice!

Ok, here's a pic of it. You can just make out the stepped core. Any ideas on who made these?

I don't like this one. To me it looks like the entire core has been sand blasted
or something. I just don't like the core details.

The scan is a poor one. I tried different settings and none of them give a true impression of what this one looks like. I'll agree the pic does make it look like its been sandblasted or something but the actual piece looks a hell of a lot better than how it appears.

I'll see what results I can get with the camera.
