Hi motorhead (can we know your name??),

That looks like a really nice cross! I don't recall seeing the maker before, so another one to go looking for.

Re the main pin, it seems to be a different colour and, more importantly, there seems to be a different degree of wear compared to the reverse of the cross. Do you think it's original to the cross?

Well,I've got that cross like you can see it at the pics. The needle is a little loose(I mean it's moving very, very easy). And you're right,at the inner side of the needle you can see the brass shining thru the silver. But my problem is,I havent found a pic to compare it with my cross.I compared it with some pics from a cross mm WS first needle type, and that would match. But I'm not shure that Wagner&Sohn used the same parts as Joh.Wagner&Sohn.I've got two WS second type in my collection, but I can't say that the core is absolutely identical...the numbers and the W would match, but not the crown. So if you have a WS with the same needle, just have a look at the core.....
              Btw-my name is Micha

                      Hi Micha,

Always good to find another EK collector! Nice to "meet" you.

I asked about the pin because it looks Meybauer-ish and a bit out of place. As I have not seen another JWS example, maybe this is normal though.

Re the core, your JWS may indeed be a match for a WS marked cross. I know there at 3 (at least) WS core types (all with distinctly different crowns) and I believe one of those core types also matches one of the two types of Godet EK1 cores I'm aware of. This same "common" core also can be found on several types of 800 only marked pinback and screwback EK1s. At least that's what I've determined by examining my own examples.

How this came about is anyone's guess. Maybe one of the manufacturers was a supplier to all the others. Maybe there was a master-daughter die scenario (as in coin production) resulting in several companies using core dies with the same features. I don't think we'll ever know.

                      Regards
