First Medal Bar

I picked it up in a coin shop several years ago. The LS is a space filler as it was "deswastikated", hook and all, when I got it. First Hanseatenkreuz, too.

Got this in 1975 as a high school senior. Paid $125, which was a fortune then, at a plain old flea market (when such "finds" were an every weekend event!!!) but made lifelong connection with the seller who remains a friend to this day.

There were a dozen naval engineering and technical officers with this combination.

This bar opened my eyes to the vast, varied, beautiful world of "Imperial" and began weaning me off that horrible, icky, zinky (if then CHEAP! ) Third Reich stuff!

Here is my first bar. This basic 1870 bar is what convinced me that Imperial, especially 19th century is what I enjoy the most. Before collecting Imperial I collected a bit of everything with little focus. 20 something bars and a gob of individual orders and medals later I am still having as much fun with it as when I first got this one. The arrangement of this bar is also neat. It is one of few I have seen with the centenary medal mounted in front of campaign medals.

My first medal bar which I don’t own anymore was a Prussian Iron Cross with a 1914-18 Honour Cross parade mounted with bright red felt backing. I know, I know not anything special.

My first bar

was breathtaking. I bought a bar and document group for a Saxon Leutnant. Long gone, but it had an Albert Order, RK2 w. Swords. This was the piece that caused me to switch to strictly Imperial and eventually, only Saxony. It was beautiful!

My first was common. Bavarian MVK 3rd class w/swords, FKE, Austrian, Tirolean and Hungarian Commemoratives. I suppose the recipient could have added a Bulgarian commemorative to complete the "I was there, but didn't do much" combo.

I sold it a long time ago.

My second medal bar was this:



The ZLO is a one-sided wearer's copy, but with a nicely enameled center that may be original. The odd thing is the EK on combatant ribbon but the FKE without swords.

This was Jason's, posted for him. Now what I find really interesting is that somebody took the trouble--which I have never seen before, of coloring the binding cord that keeps the awards from banging around so the EK is held taut with white AND BLACK colored thread "hidden" against the cross's own colors. Neat!
