'14 EK2 Query

Got this cross during my wanderings today. It is in immaculate condition. The core is cast. Frames have a frosted appearance. It is the regular WW1 size of cross--at first I thought it was WW2-era when I saw it...

My question regards the marking on the ring.

Here are the marks; to me it looks like a half-moon next to a W. It's definitely not a partially obliterated S.

What do you guys think?

My list also shows a "RW" and "LW". It could be part of the "LW"

Yeah, I think you are right...it's probably L W, but the "L" looks more like a C than an L....

Hi Eric,

Looks like LW to me as well. The curvature on the left of the L could be part of the puncg or maybe the punch "slipped" a bit when the mark was applied.

PS: Has it been dipped/cleaned - it's in amazing condition for 80 year old silver if uncleaned!

I was wondering that myself-- but if it has indeed been dipped, wouldn't the finish on the core have suffered?

There are very unform minute particles of rust along the sections of the (loose) core which meet up with the edges of the frames. If the cross has been cleaned I wouldn't expect this to be there. The bulk of the core itself has 99.99% of the finish intact.

In short, I dunno one way or another!
