    Imperial Trophy Question

I would like to get information on this award.

I believe it is a trophy for hiking.

    - beer stein in .800 silver
    - 19 inches tall, 3 1/2 pounds in weight
    - hallmarked crescent and crown "C.Becker" Coln
    - first awarded to Lieutenant Knewitz "Rennen 1903"
    - other recipients include "Zimmerman Palme", "Zimmerman Siegfried", "Zimmerman Lieschen"

This is the wording engraved on the bottom of the trophy:

If someone could provide a translation and any other information regarding the recipients, I would appreciate it.

      This is the unit:

      1. Rheinisches Train-Bataillon Nr. 8

Das 1. Rheinische Train-Bataillon Nr. 8 war das Train-Bataillon des VIII. Armee-Korps.

There is still today an association - like e vet's association - who are interested in the history of this unit.

I think this should be the correct first part of the engraved text :

            Thanks

            Thank you for the information.
            What does the inscription mean?

I will try a translation but I am not very good in these things:

"Who has avoided the pitfalls and has reached at first the distant goal he should own the prize

              till another is better"

                Competition

                Thanks again!

What kind of competition do you think it was? I have heard boating, walking, and hiking!

The word "Rennen" is not a specific term for a particular race, only a general term like the English word "race". You could likely eliminate auto racing in 1903, but precisely what kind of race is not certain.

"Rennen", usually is a horse race.

                      Thanks

Thanks for this information. It makes sense that the trophy would be for a horse race. Train Units worked with horses and I suspect that the names "Palme", "Siegfried", and "Lieschen" were the names of their mounts.
