    My new Iron Cross

    Hello fellows,

I got a new Iron Cross today, I want to share with you.

    It has a nice gravue "Hptm. Suffert - Pion.B. 15 - Ypern - 4.4.1915"

Maker of this Cross was Wagner & Sohn (WS marked next to the catch).

Maybe somebody has any informations on this Soldier?

    Best wishes

    Joerg

            Hallo Joerg!

I really like this cross...I have an interest in what Canadians and Brits refer to as the "Second Battle of Ypres"...at first I thought the dates corresponded to this battle but, alas, it's a few weeks too early! The battle began officially on the 22nd of April... It was the first occasion that poison gas was used in the war and was the first major engagement involving Canadian troops.

It's a really nice cross and I have always liked these privately engraved examples. Thanks a lot for sharing...I hope somebody can dig up some info on the recipient.

            Cheers,

            Adam

I prefer yours to this one...

              Great stuff Jörg, as usual!
Did you try the homepage of the Volksbund, maybe KIA.
Maybe some other member has the Bataillonsgeschichte.
              Regards
              Gilles

I searched for him on the Volksbund website, but without a result.

                      Hauptmann Suffert

                      Joerg;

Looking in Ehrenrangliste 1914-1918, there was only one Sueffert (with an Uemlaut) but no Suffert in the index, but, looking at 1. Elsaessisches Pionier=Bataillon Nr. 15 on page 576, there he is, Hauptmann Suffert, retired Major a. D. Suffert, so was a regular officer, survived the war, and was probably alive in 1926. As he was in Ehrenrangliste 1914-1918, he must have been a regular officer (just said that), and as he was in a unit based in Strassburg, Alsace he probably was from some other area of the German Empire. (Note that he was not in the index, you researchers, but is in the body of the book. Don't understand this myself.)

Looking in the non-indexed 1912 Rangliste (ca. 735 pages) of 6. 10. 12., there he is again, a Hauptmann (date of rank 1. 10. 12, only five days old! - see next paragraph), the mystery code is A8a, and seemingly was the CO of the 3rd Company.

However, in the full 1911 Rangliste as of 1. 5. 11., page 487, he is also listed as Hauptmann of the 3. Komp., but there is a code Ern. 17. 5. 10, so probably my date of rank given above is "full of beans". (Anyone out there know what the 1912 date was, if not DOR, or is the Ern. 17. 5. 10 another sort od DOR, possibly a brevet rank? I know a lot of you know this stuff better than I do.)

Looking in the 1912 Dienstaltersliste we find, on page 167, Suffert as a Pionier=Offizier with a DOR of 17. 5. 10. as Hauptmann, 27. 1. 06. as Oberleutnant, and 27. 1. 96. as Leutnant. He is in PB 15 as of 1912.

Looking in the 1910 Dienstaltersliste we find, on page 163, Suffert as a Pionier=Offizier with a DOR of 27. 1. 06. as Oberleutnant and 27. 1. 96. as Leutnant. He is in PB 15 as of 1910. The cut date for these publications seems to be late April.

                      Gruss aus Philadelphia,

                      Bob Lembke

Ricardo - thanks for sharing your cross! A nice and quaint gravue you have there in your cross.

Gerd, I got this Cross from a Haushaltsauflöser / Houshold Liquidator.
He has still some boxes with papers and books from the family - I hope he will find some documents or informations about the Soldier.

                          Best wishes
