I saw this sword hilt for sale(now sold) on the e-stand

A WW2 German army vet had the hilt of his sword, as he broke the blade off for fear of being arrested for possessing a weapon after the war. He said he broke the blade off by wedging it between two small trees and then bent the sword till the blade broke off. He showed me his sword hilt and it was broken off just like the one in the link which leads me to think this was done to this sword as well. Any other opinions?
