    Medal Bar Questions

A friend of mine recently picked up an interesting 11 piece medal bar in an interesting configuration. A second class 1870 Iron Cross is on the left side and the other medals include (not in order) a Prussian Order of the Crown, Saxon Merit Award, a post-WWI Silesian Eagle, Red Eagle 4th Class, Weimar-era Flanders Cross, a WWI German Naval league bravery medal, 1870 Commemorative medal, Centenary Medal, and a 25 year service cross. If he received the 1870 Iron Cross by the time WWI started he would have been a bit on the older side, perhaps in his mid to late 50s. Would the likely scenario have been that he was a career service man who ultimately found his way into the Marine-Korps Flanders during the war or was the more likely scenario that he was a reservist who somehow served in a naval sea battalion? I know nothing of medal protocol as I'm a headgear guy. Any thoughts?

    Bored and looking for enlightenment.

    Hi Dave,

Sounds interesting. How about a front and back pic?
    Best regards,

Perhaps a civil servant with the navy. Unless there are battle clasps on the Flanderen Jesus.

Don, a most plausible explanation, and no, there is no clasp on the Flanders medal.

          Thanks for your insight.

The lack of a clasp points to no frontline service and perhaps not even active service. Civil servant is looking plausible.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a Flanderen Jesus?

I do not like the combination, a 1870 EK2 and Silesian Eagle? The Freikorps was a bunch of young turks. What would an old man be doing with them. I would have to see the bar for any further judgement.

The SE was awarded for time served. Even an old fart can sit on his ass for 6 months.

100% True. I used to have a Silesian Eagle II cl. awarded to the wife of a Silesian factory manager in Breslau.

It would still be nice to actually see the bar in question.

I agree pics would definitely aid the telling if it is real or made up
