Let's continue on from Jody's thread about WWI Starting 100 years ago. Hard to believe, I remember talking to lots of WWI vets when I was a kid. So, what about when ever we can come up with history on a date specific we post it here. We have till November 11, 2018. I have a great deal to post about Manfred von Richthofen but that will start on August 2,2018. There is a lot to cover, so let's give it a try.

100 years ago today Manfred von Richthofen was 6 miles from the Russian frontier waiting to move out. He wrote this quick note to his family;

My Dear Parents:
These are to be my last lines, written in a hurry. My most hearty greetings to you. If we should never see each other again, take these, my most sincere thanks, for everything you have done for me. I leave no debts behind me. I have, on the contrary, saved a few hundred marks which I am taking along with me.

All of the details I am posting here are from THE RED KNIGHT OF GERMANY : The Story of Baron von Richthofen written by Floyd Gibbons in 1927.

It would be good if someone (BBC, History Channel) would repeat broadcast The Great War 26-part series narrated by Michael Redgrave, made for the 50th anniversary in 1964. It was a wonderful series and worth another look.

The recent 'The World Wars', with only one episode out of six devoted to WWI was an absolutely horrendous piece of pseudo-history full of blatant inaccuracies and more concerned with melodrama than truth.

I'm so sick of the numerous docu-dramas on WWII repeated ad nauseam on the History Channel. I understand that with first-hand accounts still possible from still-living veterans, it makes for better TV. But, there are lots of archival first-hand interviews done in the 60s and 70s from all sides of the WWI.

If one speaks German, there is the 8-part series, 'Tagebücher des Ersten Weltkriegs' based on the writings of Ernst Jünger. But, that's the only current TV series on WWI, that I'm aware of.

Does anyone know of anything else that's being broadcast?

What bothers me about old footage is the so called colored videos supposed to be from that era, but in fact a lot of or all are just colorized versions of the old B&W footage

100 years ago today Germany and France declared war on each other
On the afternoon of this day in 1914, two days after declaring war on Russia, Germany declares war on France, moving ahead with a long-held strategy, conceived by the former chief of staff of the German army, Alfred von Schlieffen, for a two-front war against France and Russia. Hours later, France makes its own declaration of war against Germany, readying its troops to move into the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, which it had forfeited to Germany in the settlement that ended the Franco-Prussian War in 1871.

On the morning of August 3rd 1914 the 22 year old 2nd Lieutenant von Richthofen of the 1st Regiment of Uhlans entered the Russian village of Kielce. The war was on.

Britain and her Empire join the war.

Australia's population of 4 million will suffer over 60,000 deaths. The AIF would continued to be an all volunteer force throughout the war and fight with great distinction.

Just for the record, if Germany started WW2 1.September 1939, wouldn't it be correct to say that Austria-Hungary started WW1 28.July 1914 by declaring war on Serbia?

Yes, it's correct to say that though most are remembering their own countries entry to the war.

Australia fires the British Empires first shot of WW1! Apparently the Gun and the round fired will be placed on display in time for the 2018 anniversary at Fort Nepean.
