My great great uncle's war bringbacks

My great great uncle fought for the US in WWI as a foot soldier in the trenches. I have his canteen, an EKII miniature and these cuff ends and rings. At least I think they are cuff ends, does anyone know what they are?

    Thanks for your help!

        cuff ends

The two pairs of "cuff ends" are actually buttons made to be sewn into the back of the tunic to support the belt and field equipment. The lion on them indicates Bavarian troops.

Thanks! Oh ok, do the different colors mean something?

            buttons

Units did wear one specific color of buttons.

Do you know the unit he served? The A ring looks like US third army, which was an occupying force in ww1.

I'm not quite sure but it is very possible he was in the Third Army as I have thought that because of this ring being in his possessions.

The Bavarian buttons/belt ramps appear to be brass and steel. The brass ones date from the 1907-1915 period. There were also nickel (white metal) buttons from the same period and the color worn would depend on the unit.

The steel buttons were introduced in 1915 to replace both the brass and nickel. They were used on the simplified tunics and continued to be used until 1916-1917, when former stocks ran out and a new pattern replaced them.
