    “Dem Besten Schutzen” Medals Question

Over the years I have run across many “Dem Besten Schutzen” medals. All are silver, in two sizes, with the portraits of various different German states rulers, not just Prussians. The medals all seem to have been issued without loops and with plain edges. The medal illustrated here has been looped, privately I assume, and then had the loop crudely removed. My question, are these civilian awards or is there a military connection ? Thanks, Fred

Those are official military shooting prizes, and were given in many classes and types, in most German states. A shame they are not listed in Nimmergut's OEK, as they were non-wearable... that would probably change their popularity to better!
