    My Baden page

    If you have a chance, take a look at my Baden page. I have reorganized it somewhat and added some historical information. It (and Anhalt, the only other one I've revised) represents my initial steps in turning the pages into better references than just pictures. Let me know what you think, especially whether the page is getting too busy.

    Here at work where I am editing the pages, we have a fast server, so all the images load quite fast, but if you have a slower connection, it may take a long time.

    Fact-checking assistance would be appreciated too. I have a breakdown of regimental affiliations for the various states, but I need to check the accuracy of it. For example, I'm not sure if the Mühlhausen-based Jäger-zu-Pferd-Regiment Nr.5 was actually a Baden regiment, but one source did say that Baden had a mounted rifle regiment in addition to its 3 dragoon regiments and that one seemed like the most likely candidate.

    Also, thanks to those who've allowed me to use images to fill the gaps and, once again, any more gap fillers would be appreciated.

    Looks great to me! Not having the swiftest (or newest) equipment, it took a while downloading, but still goes quite fast-- you've just got a LOT of stuff to look at!

          Just a quickie... why are there 2 types of the Baden Merit Medal? Are they from different periods and if so what are the periods?

            Dear Dave,

            Great to see a site of my homeland Baden (I am from Heidelberg originally)!

            Two minor grammar mistakes in the German medal names:

            Orden Berthold des Erstens
            ---> has to be Orden Berthold des Ersten (without "s")

            Orden vom Zähringer Löwens
            ---> has to be Orden vom Zähringer Löwen (without "s")

                  Jäger zu Pferde

                  Dave,

                  nothing I have seen would lead me to believe Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr.5 was a "Baden" Regiment.

                  It was formed on the 1st of October 1908 consequent to the cabinet order of 31st of March of the same year from the handover of formed squadrons of the following Prussian cavalry regiments:

                  1./Ulanen-Regiment Nr.5
                  2./Dragoner-Regiment Nr.9
                  1./Dragoner-Regiment Nr.6
                  4./Ulanen-Regiment Nr.7
                  4./Husaren-Regiment Nr.3

                  Although a constituent part of the XIV army corps its cockade and helmet plate were both Prussian.

                      Rich, the first Merit Medal is from the reign of Grand Duke Friedrich I and is the type used from 1882 to 1908. The second medal is from Friedrich II's reign and is typical of the WWI alloy types. I need to re-scan the first, because the image is really blurry.

                      Glenn, thanks for the info. It's sometimes hard to distinguish between units based in a state and units raised there. The same would apply to 2. Thüringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.32, which was based in Meiningen but was a Prussian regiment.

                      Frank, thanks for the grammar updates. I studied in the Law Faculty at Heidelberg University - it's a nice town. And my family is originally from Freiburg.

                      I debated dividing the page into smaller topical subpages, but while shorter pages might load faster, the navigation would be cumbersome. My <a href="http://home.att.net/~david.danner/militaria/poland.htm">Poland</a> and <a href="http://home.att.net/~ordersandmedals/romania.htm">Romania</a> pages are subdivided into categories, but I'm not altogether happy with the look of those pages. Frames are an option, but I don't know how to write them. Thumbnails are also an option.

                      BTW, for Baden, the only major missing item is the Merit Medal of the MKFVO, which is suitably rare, being (I believe) the only officially named decoration in Imperial Germany (was the Langensalza Medal the only named service medal?). Does anyone by chance have one he could scan for me?

                          As an interesting sidelight, Baden was the only German state to mint commemorative coins in less tha 1 Thaler denominations. LeopoldI thought that not just the rich should have them, so he instituted 1 Kreuzer commems in 1844. The '71 victory set is especially nice.
