Hello everyone
I wanted to ask if someone can identify this WWI period brown leather belt or strap,
It was sent home with the effects of a young Australian lieutenant who had
served on Gallipoli in the 23rd Infantry Battalion then in France where he was
killed in August 1916.
The strap is not an Australian/British pattern Sam Browne shoulder strap nor is
it German.
My question is; could it possibly be Turkish? I have seen photos of Turkish
officers wearing Sam Browne style belts that appear to have leather loop type
attachments for the belt to pass through at each end. What do you think?
It also has a strange mark on the leather. It could be a maker’s symbol or it
could just simply be a damage mark. It looks more like a makers mark to me
though.
