    Pilot Identification?

    Dear Imperialists,

is it possible to identify the pilot (?) on this painting. I bought it several years ago and it would be great to learn more about it!

Thank you very much in advance!

IMHO, I would like to see the artist's signature at the bottom left, as another clue that can help trying ID your pilot. It might provide info about the area the painter worked on, in case his resume is available, it could show who he worked with, etc.
It might be a long shot unless someone has a really good facial recognition skills or an ID period photo portrait..
    Thanks,

Here it the social networking link of the artist's grandson who currently lives in Dusseldorf, it wouldn't hurt to casually contact him and ask him about his grandfather portfolio and if he remembers his grandfather works relating to WWI fighters pilots subjects.

Great info about the artist, now you have increased your painting value by adding it was painted by a recognized German artist.

Hope the link to the artist family gives results.
          Good luck on this quest!

This links provides interesting information about the artist's activities during war time.
            "GERHARD NEUERBURG
Painting Artist (portraits, landscape, Marine, Industrial Work )
            Born 22th Feb 1872 in Trier/Rhineland, died 10th Oct 1946 in Duesseldorf / Rhineland.
1914 - 1918 he worked in Wilhelmshaven . There he had the honour to produce in an own atelier (painting room) hundreds of portraits of German Admiralty and Marine officials (e.g. Admirals Scheer and von Hipper, von Krosigk, von Hartog, von Pohl, Engel, von Natzmer, Gatzthor, Dohna-Schlodien, Bachmann , officials of the ship "Moewe"). Especially he had the honour to portrait the crown prince Adalbert of Prussia, son of German Emperor Wilhelm II, and Grand Admiral Prince Henry of Prussia, brother of Wilhelm II. "

It provides good background, that your artist was well sought after for officers of the German military during the wartime years.
            Hope this helps!

At least we know he was a bavarian pilot...for years I read the cross and the cocade magazine, and this man seems familiar...if anyone has copies of that series...I bet he will be found pretty easily...do we have any cross and coacade readers with full sets out there?

He looks like the famous sea pilot innovator Ltn der see Gotthard Sachsenberg...see if you agree ...down some in this article...http://books.google.com/books?id=LwB...pilots&f=false

scroll down to page 19...and may be why his badge is goldish...you'll have to judge for yourself...or look here which willbe much easier...but you know all you germans look alike...hahaha...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotthard_Sachsenberg

How do we know that? The crown on the badge looks Prussian IMO. I see nothing in the photo to tell me that he is Bavarian and that is not even considering the crown on the badge.

He's wearing a Prussian type Bluse (Abzeichentuch collar). It's a Bluse of the navy type, that is, without shoulder straps.

                      Just one observation---
The badge in the painting appears to be a Navy pilot's badge
while the photo shows and observer's badge.
