Probably original. Silver, of course. It's still a pretty common coin and the hole removes any special value it might have as a coin. But, it's a cool variation (I have one myself) and wouild make a neat part of a WW1 display or a Napoleonic display. Or make it into a piece of jewelry to wear and remember your grandfather by.

My wife's grandfather fought in WWII,and he was POW in Austria. He had many story but we can't talk about it-he was sick after we met.
