    EK 1 1914 - 800 Silver

Here is a Iron Cross first class.

I buyed this fake one 10 Years ago in Germany for 5€.

Its a solid one piece construction.

The only good thing is that the cross was realy made of 800 silver.

Did anyone know where those fakes come from?

    Sorry,
This is a one piece fake that is all over ebay right now.
You can find them with all sorts of different markings
and different pins and screwbacks. You can even find
them as the Star to the grand cross.--

No idea who makes them and considering that you can
buy them for $13, I think it's safe to say they are not
        silver.

Thats the problem i have - because this one IS made of 800 Silver.

The local Goldsmith have tested the material of the cross years ago - and its realy made of 800 Silver.

I buyed this fake cross around 10 years ago for my reenacting uniform

                      Spectral analysis?

The older 'Latvian' dealies were one piece as this seems to be, but were they were making them in silver 10 years ago?

Back when this cross was made the price of silver probably wasn't as high as it is today.

Is it just me or does that cross not look silver at all?

We see these ones all the time, usually with the raised areas worn away to give them that aged look. Ebay is awash with these now, many with those spurious markings on the back.

Interesting to know how long they have been around..

I didnt know how he tested the cross. He take it in a room behind the desk and after a few minutes he come back.

The aging was finaly a real one - as i buyed the fake cross it was shiny as hell

                              Greg,

I am afraid I might have bought a pumpkin fake out of an error. This item was sold as an original by Andreas Thies, Auktion 51 lot 1192 out of the Hamelman Collection. I had marked the item for follow but must have missed the button and bidded the asking price. When the invoice arrived I realized the offer had been won and could not back off. Sorry for the crapy pics. they are quick cellphone shots.
