          Hi Paul,

compared to the Walter Schott U-boats in DN´s cataloge, it looks good.

          Hope this helps

          all the best,
          Gerd

Thanks very much for the reply Gerd, any other opinions on this badge? What I'm a little concerned about is that for a badge with so much verdigris on it,it doesn't seem to have a great deal of tarnish for an item over 80 years old,

            regards

            Paul

              Original Walter Schot no problem.

When was the IMperial Uboat badge instituted? Can someone point me to a reference?

That's a textbook original badge. My guess is that the reason for the verdigris is that it was not used much and then left in a damp place for a long period of time. Cleaning it off would be pretty difficult - best to keep it the way it is.

As for references, the sub badge was instituted February 1, 1918, for all U-boat crews who had completed 3 voyages. (This from K.G. Klietmann's "Pour le Merite und Tapferkeitsmedaille").

In this weeks version of "Replica of the Week" on Detlev Niemann's site he says concerning this badge "as the originals had seperatly attached crowns on top". What does he mean? Am I loosing something in the translation? Is he somehow referring to the pin hook and pin?

I think that's a typographical error. I looked at the German language version and it didn't mention the separately attached crowns. Obviously, both badges pictured are solid one-piece badges.

I was also wondering about this, trying to spot the separate crown attachment. Could someone else elaborate on the Detlev Niemann fake of the week.

Yes, the fake on Detlev's site is very convincing. But with a real one in hand or a good photo, it's a fake. The one above looks good.
