In my opinion the piece looks ok. I think your friend should wait for more opinions though.

The suspension looks like it could be a period replacement from a foreign maker. I can't vouch for the authenticity of this piece either but it is supposedly a 19th C. piece from French maker Sanglier:

The ribbon ring is typically French.

The cross itself looks fine, but German orders need to be thoroughly checked...

This is just "blapping out" with beer at bar (literally), but when I saw the eagle in the medallion, my first thought was "French?". No knowledge behind this, only hunch based on the very bold and detailed eagle. It has some similarities with French made Russian St.Anna order medallions with the way of details in my opinion.

This is just opinion, and influenced by couple of pints of beer so let's move on with better experts.. (But in overall, I do like that cross - where ever it was made)...

              Hello:

The piece appears to be original and made by Humbert u. Sohn of Berlin in the late 1800's. The ribbon ring is of course a post-manufacture replacement.

Only by inspection of the piece in person can 100% authenticity be determined, but this piece from the photos shown appears to conform to the details of known originals.

Collectors must be aware however that excellent-quality modern forgeries of these items are known to exist in gold.

              Best regards,

Agree with everything Rangemaster wrote, besides I think the order may be a bit older, possibly 1860s to 1870s...

Judging from the pictures, nothing's wrong with it, besides the replaced suspenion. There are worse ones out for sure...
