    Help reading german

    Hi,
this picture was liberated from the body of a german soldier killed by a french officer (1917 or 1918).
He kept this pic his whole life, looking at it sometimes, no one in the
family had the right to touch it.
I can't read german: A traduction will maybe help me to find out when and where this pic was liberated.

    Many thanks,

      I give it a shot:

      "Andenken an familie X X - X Kriegsjahr 1917"

Maybe the X words can be solved by other members?

      Cheers,

I won't help to identify the soldier but, at least, I know what it means and that the picture was liberated in 1918.

so much wifes and kids cried because of the dead of their fathers and husbands.

one of my relatives died at 1. july 1916 at the somme (thiepval/schwabenfeste)
there`s a good film about it on youtube.

so i hope there will never be a war between my country and our neighbours in france again.

May you can be heard. I've lost family as well, as I believe every one from Germany, UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, Austria, .........

On another forum a member found one Heini family: Heini Alerius, Rüppur im Grün 4

The french officer was from the 83th IR and fought from august 1914 till november 1918, wounded 3 times, its records show that he killed many men, so I really wonder why this pic? Why was he looking to it, time to time? He nearly never talked about the first war (he served again during WW2) but his nights, as his daughter told me, were full of nightmares.

              Autumn 1916, Cornillet area.
