    EK2 on trifold for review

    Hello,

I would like to hear your opinions about this cross. After selling it here on WAF, I received this message from the buyer:

"I am very skeptical that this is an original piece. The frame has no beading on the top of the obverse, the edges are sloppy and the core looks like a cast piece."

Can you please comment on the trifold as well?

    Thank you in advance, Miro.

I'm not a real expert but Id' say it's fine. Ribbing on frame really looks weak, but that can be due to poor manfacture or wear, or both. The core is cast indeed, but that's okay with early pieces. Details of core are good enough. Although a respected member said no long ago that all imperial pieces are of the same quality, I still disagree. This one is perhaps just not the very finest made, but still a honest piece. We've seen on this forum even less elaborated ones with thumbs up.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

        Hi Miro,

it is a good cross, with a casted core (which could even be a pre instead of a con!).

I cannot really comment on the trifold, but I don't see any red flags.

        Best regards,
        Michel

A fine original EK2 with a cast-iron core, just exactly as the early ones should be.

Miro, you sold him a USED cross.? One that was probably worn by an actual veteran .

Honestly a very nice original cross, that shows some wear/use ,tri fold ribbon IMO Ok.

No red flags for me also. Nice cast core.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I really appreciate every sentence you wrote. Seller decided to leave the cross, so you saved us both from returning procedure and additional costs.

                  All the best, Miro

Looks good to me. I do have a question.
How wide is the ribbon. I know that on a lot of original trifolds,
the ribbon used was wider than the standard ribbon. Godet
for example used a 40mm wide ribbon. This was done so that
everything still looked proportional when it was folded. The smaller,
                    standard ribbon looked too small.

                    Here is an example----

                      Hi Greg

This ribbon was 40 mm wide, as is the ribbon on trifold that stayed in my collection. When you fold 30 mm wide ribbon, it looks more like Sachsen style, or 1870/71 veteran style.

Lovely early cross! Not sure about the Trifold but can't see both edges of ribbon. Rivet looks a bit weird but might be the pic. Guess they had all kinds of rivets in 1900's

A footnote about trifolds. I'ts extremly hard to find modern 40mm ribbon and all period i saw has been 40 and all modern made 38mm. That doesn't mean someone actually used 38mm or smaller back in the days. Ring rivet on back has always been white metal on period ones and both yellow and white on modern.
