I've checked my 1914 Weiderholungsspange, (yep, I've got one too) and can't see any balast tanks........so I am unable to figure out why these rare bars have such a propensity to 'surface'.....usually in this 'single mount with oaks' format...
Is ANYONE prepared to offer a theory for this?
Not for me.......ever again....sadly.......

I'll stick my neck out again The cross compares favorably with one of mine, other than the strange bluecfinish, which could be due to the scanner or editing. I'm not that happy with the Oakleaves and Spange, though. The finish on the leaves is too rough for my liking, and the 5 seems to be a hybrid of 2 examples I have. The pebbling on the Spange seems irregular, and the border is slightly wider than mine. Also, the enamel looks slightly lumpy, whereas I'd expect it to be smooth and level with the frame of the cross. I might go for the Cross by itself, but I think I'd pass on the garnish.

I noticed this one on Peter's site as well and had the same thoughts as Tom. I compared the cross and didn't see any real red flags but I am not that keen on the oaks or the spange. I too find it odd that these crop up in this kind of configuration, and for one find it troubling.
He's only a few hours drive from me, might be worth popping up on the weekend to see it in hand...or...even better....Tony's right in the same town...where is Tony these days anyhow (hoping I haven't stepped in it saying that as I was away for a short while...and there are a few changes around the forum)
Cheers,
Adam

The EK looks to be okay. Bluish color can be a lighting sheen reflecting off the surface.
I personally don't care too much for the 25 Oaks. They lack a certain quality and crispness to them.
The Weiderhollungsspange looks to be a casting. I am specifically refering to the top right right area of the bar. It looks to have some pourosity showing thru the surface. the lower right corner of the bar shows an irregularity of the border/pebbling that one wouldn't find on a struck badge.
I would like to see the reverse of this bar which is unfortunately not shown. I wonder why?
Just some thoughts.
TonyAn opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.
