The best maker for EKs 1914 is...

    Hi all,

I have no idea about the EK II and EK I 1914. I wonder if there are some manufacturers better or more reputed than others, as happens with EKs 1939. So my question is... what are the more desirable makers of EKs 1914? Any preferences?

Thanks so much for your comments.

Do you mean EK's made after 1918 in the Weimar period?

You're in the wrong thread. Go to the Imperial German thread to find the experts. But, to answer your question in part, it's not only about makers, but also about which core and which frame was used to make the EK. The list is long for desirable makers, but includes: any cross marked 800, 900, 935 or Silber, CD 800 (Carl Dillenius), Godet, Juncker, Zimmermann, K.A.G., S-W, W. u. S., Fr., MEH, We, D.R.G.M. 653146 (Paul Meybauer)...the list goes on and on...

          Hello Martin,
          Welcome to the Imperial forum
The answer to your question can be somewhat a personal preference, the makers that "bolewts58" gave are indeed some of the more desired by many of the 1914 collectors. But there are many more to add to that list depending on if your looking at the EK1 or EK2 .One of the main things to remember is that unlike the 1939s which ceased production at wars end the 1914s were still being produced well into the 1940s. So if the cross is of the award period 1914 to 1919 and of the awarded type and not private purchase then to some it is more desired than one produced later or as a private purchase. But some collectors like the more high quality private purchase jewellers pieces.
As you can see it is a personal choice.

          Regards,Scott

How do you tell if a cross is an awarded one or a private purchase cross?

The two best makers of the 1914 EK2 are Godet and AWS. For the EK1 the two best makers are Godet and AWS. Amazing quality (on most pieces) and terrific designs.

All awarded EK1s will be flat with a pinback. Any kind of screwback, or fancy attachment device, or vaulting, means the EK was a private purchase piece. Private purchase EK2s are harder to differentiate, but awarded ones will have silver frames and a magnetic core -- probably. A ton of later EKs have non-silver frames and non-magnetic cores. These are most likely not awarded types.
              Best regards,
              Streptile

Thanks a lot Scott and streptile. I have a modest collection of Third Reich awards, including several EKs, but I know nothing about EKs 1914. So, I learnt a lot with your answers.

its absolute nonsense that there would be a best maker

                  this is imperial ,,,

most imperial collectors are not so fixed towards a certain maker .

the range of crosses who are popular covers the whole spectrum of produced crosses from 1813 to 1870 and WW1 throe WW2 and 1957.

from the most common crosses to the rarest peace's
In quality all crosses are 100% equal to each other...

the rarest crosses are all known
                  the common crosses to
some,, the amount off silver used is higher.
some condition is bad ,,,,,some the condition is good.
some are stamped with rare maker markings .
some are aye pleasing extravagant variants.
                  and so on

all private purchase and rewarded crosses are in popularity and quality equal to each other .

so is the quality of these equal,
al do to what exactly is private or not a lot of questions still open .

opinions to what is the best maker is are strictly personal preference of individual collectors ...

                  or
Dealers who want to artificially influence this social media platform to they're own financial benefit ..

                  Martin
a regular KO cross can just as much be ahhh'd and ohh'd as a high profile Werner cross.

                  quality is equal
Best makers in the 1939 section is absolute nothing more as fantasy non sense..that is keeping itself alive as financial interest is of the highest priority over there .

                  regards kay

And I say it again ,,there is no best maker of iron Crosses.

there is no quality ,,,,or lesser craftsmanship skills difference,,,,
between a regular unmarked or maybe lesser prestige Cross and a AWS or godet or any other high prestiges maker .

there is no best maker ,,,,,,

                          only ,,,
strictly personal preference of individual collectors ..
                          or
artificially influence of social media platform to financial benefit ..

                          .
