    U-Boot Badge

Cleaned or polished I assume? Not the usual dark patina or greenish tinge usually found on these ...

I've come to notice people just love throwing dirt on something if they can. I guess by the lack of response it's a-ok.

            Hi Darell,

the 1918 submarine badges are a minefield.. I like your example. Anyway I think nobody really knows. If you search in the old threads sometimes badges with casts mark pitting are given the especially when Meybauer logo is there whilst the same pitting are given a if on another badge. As they where instituted in 1918 and the war was coming to its end, I guess the most shabby examples might be the good ones . They most were probably all bought straight out of the 1920-30ies Deumer, Juncker and S&L catalogs. I think they kinda looked cool and brought respect when worn on a ww2 marine uniform.

I have three, all "dubious". I like em all

            Best regards,
            Michel

Hi Michel, I have searched and viewed all the threads I could find. I'm not so much concerned about originality. I just seem to get this feeling this one has been polished or heavily cleaned. I'm by no means an Imperial expert, however, many I have seen of this maker tend to be a darker (almost bronze color) and even have traces of green on the surface. This one tends to have what appears to be the remaining patina that you would generally see. However, I don't know enough to be 100% sure. And as always, pictures are sometimes misleading.

Hard to say but to me it doesn't look cleaned, just well preserved.
                Best regards,

Looks like a fine uncleaned badge to me. There are still some spots of verdigris on the badge which I think would have been removed if the badge had been polished.

Thanks for the comments guys. Maybe just being paranoid. It's not mine, but I've always been looking to pick up a nice example of one. We'll see. Got a long shopping list so it might have to wait.

It looks cleaned to me. You can still see some of the green paint that was originally on the wreath.

                        Hi Don,

Sub badges did not have green paint on the wreath. I think you are thinking of the green wash present on some Naval Airship badges. The green present on this badge is verdigris.

Hi Gary, like Don, my understanding is that the green is a wash and not verdigris. I am hopefully buying a rare example that has all of its wash still present and is ex Gordon Williamson collection.
                          Cheers - Greg

As far as I am aware there was never a green wash/paint on submarine badges. They were of gold finish. The only Naval badge that had a green wash is the Naval Airship Commemorative badge. I have never read or seen anything about sub badges having a green wash on the wreath. The example shown is a perfect original IMO. The green specks are verdigris.

Gary that is incorrect. Gordon Williamson has shown documentation that the U-boot badges also had a green wreath, at least the early ones.
