Personalized Infantry Reserve Beer Stein

This dated, 1/2 litre, military beer stein bears the reserve regiment details of the owner whose name and picture also appear, as well as four German rhymes.

There is very nice detailing on the pewter lid of this mug.

There is also a shadow-image in the bottom of the beer mug which can be seen when held up to the light.

Top lettering:

The picture of the soldier has lettering left and right:
Erinnerung / Dienstzeit

The top left image has lettering which reads:
Wo Soldaten biwakier'n, geh'n die Maedchen gern spazier'n

Bottom left image reads:
Lange truebe Stunden, hab' ich im Arest empfunden

Top right image lettering:
Wo Inft. manoeverir'n, muss der der staerkste Feind verlier'n

Bottom right:
Brueder stost die Glaeser an, es lebe der Reservemann

There are a couple of hairline cracks but the mug is in otherwise fine condition, given that it is 110 years old!

I second this, a very nice and interesting stein.

Hard enough to find one with an image of the owner at the best of times. One of my favourite optional extras that the original stein owner could get at the time when he ordered it in 1903. Nice clear image of his uniform, NCO button and visor hat with cockades.

It is most kind and helpful of you to post this service information, some of which I am able to decipher and read, except for the lower notations in column 10. I wonder what is included in the columns which we cannot see. If you do not mind my asking, do you have this information or is it available somewhere?

Sorry that's all I have and I'm not sure why those columns are blocked with paper. Lazy people when they scan it probably.

Oh and for WWI I believe he was supposedly in the Ersatztruppenteile der Landwehr-Infanterie-Regimenter

Thanks, again, for the additional information. It would be interesting to know if he received any awards (column 11), although his service seems to be between the two wars. Also, as appears from one scene on the stein, it would be interesting to know if he had any judicial convictions (columm 14)...although any time that he might have spent in the military lock-up would perhaps not show there.

In any case, your feedback has put some "flesh on the bones" of this interesting regimental stein!

Eh, I collect regimental steins and the jail scene is quite common. I don't believe it has any ties to actual time served in the military jail.

By the way, if you were interested in doing further information on the reservist, you have his birthday and the city he was born. Emailing the Augsburg archives would be your next step.

I have a pretty rare stein, that the reservist served in China. After finding out where and when he was born I wrote his local archives and they had an entire file on him (that one of his relatives compiled). It even included military photos of him in China! This led to eventual contact with living relatives of the reservist. You never know what you'll find, sometimes you get really lucky. Keep in mind though, those type of results are rare.
