    Uhlan Question

    Wie gehts:

I purchased an officer's feldgrau ulanka for either the 12th or 16th regiment at the MAX Show last week. Unfortunately, the correct boards were not on the tunic and the buttons used were the later painted steel style, so that didn't help in identifying which regiment. However, there are some hints as to the ultimate owner of the tunic was. Hopefully there is enough information here to narrow down or identify the candidate. Presuming that the loops and decorations were original, this chap had a Hohenzollern House Order w/ swords, three breast awards (assuming one of them is an EK1), a ribbon bar for probably 4 to 5 awards and the turkish iron half moon (a screw back). Any help is much appreciated.

    Regards

      Hey Mark

Thanks for your comments. I had the cap prior to finding the tunic, and it is piped white around the crown and on top (only) of the light blue band, which is specific to those two regiments. Interestingly, the feldgrau material in the cap and the tunic are almost identical!

          Hey Dave,

I would bet that this tunic could be Id'd....

You mention that you think the boards are not original to the tunic.....

With the quality of the tunic and the 4 breast badges (three on the left and the 'moon' on the right)... I would bet he was probably field grade (i.e. Major etc)..

How many Majors and OberstLt would have been assigned to these units ?

          My two cents worth..

          Cheers
          Mark

Mark and Bob, thanks for your responses.

            Mark:

You are correct, these boards are not orginal to the tunic, and will fill the gap until I find a pair of proper ones. As far as the possible field rank for the tunic, I was thinking similarly. Assuming this chap was not a reservist, there is one Oberstlt. for each of these regiments (v. Below and v.Krosigt) and one major (Berner) for the 12th and two majors (Jouanne and Mass) for the 16th in the 14-18 honor list. Each of these units also have six rittmeisters. I was hoping that the HHOX and the cresent moon combo would help narrow things down a bit.

            Regards

            Dave
