Thank you, it looks like the exact badge pictured. The finish now makes sense as it states that it is silvered brass. This information coupled with the photos of the 3rd Reich era Juncker hinges posted by Chris would lead me to believe that this one is from that period as well.

The weight reported on this one was about 2/3 to 3/4 of what a 800 silver type would weigh.

Good to have this posted as this variation does not seem to be encounterd very much.

After a re-read of this section of the Baldes book, I should post a re-vision to my last post as it is too late to edit it. It would appear that there is a good chance that this badge is in fact a later WWI wartime badge.

That is what I am also thinking Phil,

this could be the last of the hollow Imperial pilot badges struck from nickel silver or brass which is then silver plated.

The die has become some what worn and the thicker harder nickel/ brass does not take on as much detail as the softer 800 grade silver.

The hinge is the first of a simplified version on this type of badge which they went on to use on all their buntmetall badges in the 1930's & 1940's,
