I Class B Marked Iro Cross in Case.

    Hello, how are you guys?

I won the auction for this iron cross from Klaus Butschek.
It comes with the package and case of issue.
    And it`s marked "B".
Well this is my first, first class Iron Cross and i will like to know what do you think about this one?Is everything ok?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Amilcar,

You have picked up a nice cross, case and outer carton. No way to be 100% sure (unless direct provenance was provided?) they have always been together of course but they still display as a nice set. The catch on the cross is an old (probably period) repair. The "B" is not considered a maker's mark but rather an inspection/assembly mark - different markings can be found at the same location.

All in all - a great start to your Imperial EK collection!

    Regards
    Mike

Agree almost totally with the said, but I'm quite sure the set has not always been together, as the box is for award type crosses and the cross is vaulted, thus private purchase. Not sure about the case, it could be any of those. If the case came with an awarded cross, it was no earlier than 1916/17, as it's a later type.

All this still doesn't mean the set has been put together by a dealer or collector - it may have been from same soldier, who just confused box and cross of his several ones - as said, "no way to be 100% sure."

I have a general question though. I have not paid much attention to the marks on the undersides of pins but how do we know they are not maker marks?

                I've seen a "Y", "K", "B." What others are out there?

.....which is why the word CONSIDERED was used in my earlier response. I agree, no-one KNOWS.

Let's not forget, there are definite maker marked EK1s which ALSO have marks in this location under the pin. S-W (commonly a number) is a prime example, J H Werner (roman numerals) is another.

I've also seen lettered markings on unmarked WS/FR/Fr type EK1s (B, Z or N, "speeding A" or alternately a reversed E attached to an A, etc).

Perhaps if we applied our collective brain power to it we could solve this.

Hello, thanks a lot for your help guys.
One question, i won the auction in 270€ = 360$. Do you think that it is a fair price for this set?
                      Thanks.

Yes, I would say that is a very fair price.

Has the pin/hinge also a replacement? It's attachment to the cross looks similar to the catch
