              Hi,

It is really in sad shape. It can be restored but due to the early model it won't be as easy to find parts. I'd ask Brian at www.pickelhaubes.com

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Thank you Joe! it helped. I will try over there. I just am unfamiliar with this early of a pickle. Yes, it's barebones but original.

I believe that you have the skull and trim of an Imperial German Dragoon helmet. If so, it's quite rare and will be difficult to find the parts. At the same time it will be worth a hell of alot more than you might suspect.

I do not believe it's that old, probably 1900 - 1915. Good find!

While the pictures are dark, it looks to me to be an 1860 model. 1860 types looked a lot like later dragoon helms with square visors, cruciform bases and rear lugs. I am by far not an expert in these but I am ending a sale of a similar helmet that was mistaken as dragoon. <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#d6dcfe><TD noWrap align=right>2271300757</TD><TD align=right></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The only difference between a 1860 line infantry and an 1860 Dragoner would be the front plate. The painted-on date is quite common for a pre 1871 helmet, mine are all marked this way. I am afraid it is not a simple matter of popping on a spike, the spike would have to be a M1860 pattern and the spike on this shell has been ripped out of the cruciform spike base, You would need to replace the entire base. It will be very difficult to find a cruciform spike base and spike to fit it, a front plate, chinscales, M1856 screw post retainers, the correct Kokarde.............

                        Tony,

Didn't 1860 Dragoons also have convex chinscales? This one obviously has none but I'm not sure of when they started differentiationg the scales.

Thank you Tony! Than I guess it would be safe to say restoration is next to immpossible. Does it still retain collectability value in this condition? Are these common? Thanks in advance

In 1856, the convex brass chinscales were changed to flat brass chinscales for all Infantry units. You are correct Joe, cavalry and Field Artillery units continued to utilize the convex chincales. Here is the evloution of the issued Mannschaften Pickelhaube:

But until Gebirgsjäger finds out what plate it needs, (line eagle or Dragoner) then the appropriate chinscales would have to be found. Personally, I would pass on a helmet like this, as finding all the parts will be a nightmare. So to me, it would have very limited value. Here is an M1860 from my collection to give you an idea what it would look like.
