Gents, please help on these. I think the Bavarian a fake - note the lack of detail in the rear tire. But I am not certain. The others I think are ok. Please let me know what you think.

Hi Nick, I think the Bavarian is posibly quite ' dangerous' ! It has all the features on the front detail of the badges not liked generally by collectors. In other words , when a Bavarian badge comes up for sale it is usually one of these. Admittedly they are not usually found with this type of reverse plate and pin /hinge/catch set up but the front giveaways are all there, no spokes in one wheel of the undercarriage, non-ribbed (flattened area) on the bottom right of the base wreath ribbon and several other traits that point to these being wrong and commonly seen . The reason I say 'dangerous' is because of the back plate and its similarity to the original Karl Pollath/ Carl Poellath badges reverses . I believe that there may well be a nucleus of original badges that are like the front detail of this one and perhaps stem from the post war era,1930's or so but proving that is impossible .The badge has been so heavily copied since and as I said ,seen commonly for sale . The waters have been muddied so much by fakers now and link to that the lack of good solid period info and you have a minefield on your hands.It may well be a post war piece (at best ) but I would stay away from any badges that have this front detail.FergComment

Sound thinking, the two badges shown in Carsten Baldes book are in fact 'marriages ' of Juncker badges ,by that I mean standard Juncker Prussian pilot badges that have been altered to take a Bavarian crown.This is a ligit period alteration that is encountered from time to time. The details on the front of the badges differ from that of the doubtful Bavarian ( they are the standard Juncker die detail). I believe that there was no standard issue Bavarian badge to be had by Bavarian pilots so if they wished for a badge that sported their countrys crown which they were entitled to wear then the options were either a costly privately made piece by probably Pollath or one or two other makers or adapt their existing Prussian badge by changing the crown .Obviously firms like Juncker and Meybauer and others to a lesser degree offered this service of alteration ,or maybe they were a special order from outset we cannot say. They are not commonly seen but they do exist and are genuine,I have several and can be seen in wear on some period pictures. To go back to the beginning , this is not the same badge as the one we are discussing. FergComment
