Hello to everyone,

I am looking for detailed information about the owner of this medal bar.

Lt. Col. (retired) Karl Baron von Sartor of Gansheim.

Pictures of him or where he served would be appreciated.

I know he received his medals on May 16, 1914.

Karl Joseph Anton Maria Freiherr von Sartor auf Gansheim, born 30 October 1864 in Munich, died 30 September 1919 in Munich.

He was promoted to char. Oberst z.D. on 30 November 1914. On 12 August 1917 he was named commander of Bavaria mob. Etappen-Kommandantur Nr. 313. His only war decoration was the Bavarian King Ludwig Cross on 9 August 1917, which he obviously never mounted on the medal bar before his death.

He didn't receive the medals on May 16, 1914. That was just the date of the ranklist which Werner used as a source in his database. The actual award dates:

His grandfather was elevated to the nobility by the King of Bavaria in 1822 and further elevated to a baron in 1824.

There aren't any campaign or combat medals on the bar because it reflects his service in the peacetime army. He entered the Bavarian Army on 8 August 1883 and retired on 17 December 1913. The bar was likely made shortly after he retired.

The Bavarian Military Merit Order 4th Class with Crown was awarded on retirement, basically for his 30 years' service. So it would be analogous to a US Army lieutenant colonel retiring and getting the Legion of Merit. He had earlier received the 4th Class without the crown.

He received the Brunswick order mainly due to his service as a squadron leader in the 6. Chevaulegers-Regiment Prinz Albrecht von Preußen, whose Inhaber at the time he served in the regiment was Prince Albrecht of Prussia, Regent of the Duchy of Brunswick. He also received the Red Eagle 4th Class at some point, maybe while serving in this regiment, probably because of the Prussian connection. Prince Albrecht, by the way, was the Kaiser's cousin, a nephew of Kaiser Wilhelm I.

When he received the Crown to his Red Eagle 4th Class in 1912, he was commander of the 2. Ulanen-Regiment König, which doesn't have a Prussian connection (its Inhaber was the King of Bavaria). So that award probably reflects Prussia acknowledging his earlier service as well as his later command.

I'm not sure why he wasn't recalled for a field command in the war. Maybe health issues.

By the way, his son Walther Freiherr von Sartor auf Gansheim, was killed in action in France in 1940 as a major. He had received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class and the Bavarian Military Merit Order 4th Class with Swords as a lieutenant in World War I.
