    Latest Additions to My Collection

    Here are the latest additions to my WWI collection. Not bad for an investment of $160.

    From top to bottom, left to right:

    Baden haube - complete with both Kokarden;
    Prussian haube - complete with both Kokarden;
    Bayer haube - complete with both Kokarden and repro chinstrap;

    M16 with M16 liner - complete liner no chinstrap;
    M16 with M17 liner - partial liner with partial chinstrap (this one is Austrian - there weren't many Austrians on the Western Front);
    M18 - complete liner no chinstrap;

    08 Fernglas Binoculars;
    Hebel flare gun (heavy sucker);
    eK2s
    M1917 US Trench knife;

    Granatenwerfer 16

    Some nice items. If they are all new, you have made quite a haul!

          Yup - and the guy payed the shipping to get it to me.

          Got all of it in trade for 1 item and the guy threw a chunk of cash on top of it.

          I stumbled across a Quist M1940 SS helmet, named to a Pz. Gr. unit, at a local auction house. It went for $160 and everyone thought I paid way too much. The M1940 is 98% (with liner and chinstrap) and the decal is 99%. The decal got a 99% because someone smudged the decal when it was applied. The helmet got a 98% because the liner rivets were missing. It was appraised and verified by Kelly Hicks.

          The helmet was appraised at $12K - $15"K, but I was thrilled with the transaction.

              Great stuff, especially the grenade thrower.

                  I just have a knack - I sort of just stumble across things. This is the biggest ticket item though.

                  I have four other items I've come across that are now in museums here in the US and Europe.

                  Other than the helmet the best deal I found was a pair of MINT - as in never being issued - US WWII Airborn boots. The laces were still bundled with the original paper covers on them and there was an original, untouched, tin of boot polish stuffed into the toe of one of them. It was assumed it was issued with the boots. This pair of boots was sitting on a "junk" table at a garge sale and if it didn't sell it was going to Goodwill. The owner had a whopping $1.00 on them.

                      As Paul Harvey would say, "that's the rest of the story". Makes sense now. That TR helmet sounds unbelievable. Would have like to have seen it. I don't collect WWII, but I can appreciate a rarity.

                          Thanks for showing that helmet. No wonder the guy wanted it so badly.
