    My first pre-1915 ribbon bar

I just bought this beauty from our very own Stogierick:

...any thoughts on this one? Likely rank of owner? Army? Navy? etc.

    before 1897!!! No centenary medal!

I think he entered after 1866 or was still at officers school then; no 1866 campaign cross. Earned a EK in 1870, added a Red eagle peacetime, received his XXV beginning of the 90ies. Last one is for sure a Oldenburg House Order.
I assume You have there a Major. For an ID it is very thin. I had a very similar ID problem but with 2 more "hot spots" and this took me monthes. A chance is, to check the Prussian ranklists from 1891 to 1897 for a Major with this combo.

    Best regards

    Daniel

I have the 1894 list and I was wondering, as I am not good at this, what the symbols for the combo I am looking for would look like. Also a major in German is a.......?

        Best, Sal

          Major!

That's one of the easy ones.

                My understanding:
                1. 1870 EK2
                2. Prussian RAO4 (I'm guessing on that)
                3. Prussian DA25
                4. Franco-Prussian War Commemorative
                5. Oldenburg Haus- und Verdienstorden von Herzog Peter Friedrich Ludwig

No idea how they would have abbreviated the last one, but "PFL" may have been an element.

In the first pages of the ranklist, there are the abbreviations of the various orders. For example, the Red Eagle Order 4 class, is shown as a cross with 4 next to it. So, what we have here (with the corresponding description) is:

                  1. Rother Adler-Orden 4ter Klasse
                  2. Eisernes Kreuz 2ter Klasse
                  3. Dienstauszeichnungskreuz
                  4. 1870-71 KDM (not shown in ranklists)
                  5. Oldenburgische Haus- und verdienst-Orden, Ehrenritter-Kreuz 2. Kl.

The symbol for the last one is: OV3b or OV3bX for the addition of swords.

In the 1894 ranklist, there are at least 10 Majors with this combination of orders, and one with a rare OV3b.a.X.a.R (2nd class with swords at ring).

Even without an ID, it's still a nice addition to my collection.

Thanks so much for your help!

The symbols and abbreviations for the decorations are at the beginning of the Ranklist.

Red Eagle 4 is a plain cross with a 4
The EK looks like a EK
The XXV cross is a pebbled cross
The 1870 war medal does not show up
                      Oldenburg should be either OV3a (knight 1st) , OV3b (knight 2nd with crown) or OV3c (knight 2nd)

                      Best regards

                      Daniel
