Wagner & Sohn EK picture request

    Hello all

Does anybody have a 1914 EK marked WS, for the firm of Wagner & Sohn? I have some reference material here but I seem have come to the conclusion that WS used two different pin, catch and hook assemblies. Any information or pictures would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Regards

      Hi Dez,

I have one back in Oz, and am back home for the springbok rugby test weekend after this one, so I will dig it out, and post a pic on my return.

      Regards,

      Tim

PS, Fine cross you have there majorpayne, is it an unissued one? or just lovingly looked after.

        Hi Tim,

I think this cross is unissued. There are no marks of wear. A real fine beauty!

          Dez,
I assume you are looking for WS marked EK1's to compare pins and catches? I have a couple back at home and will post them this weekend. If you don't see them by Sunday, PM me to jog my memory.

              Hello everyone

Yes Doug I am looking at a few pictures here of EK 1's and they have different pins and WS markings. I will try and post some of these later today.

majorpayne; no harm done, that is a really nice EK2 thanks for sharing him with us.

              Regards

                Hello everyone

If we look at the following pictures from http://www.derrittmeister.com/ We can see some differences in the reverse of WS marked EK's.

The reverse of this piece looks questionable to me, I don’t like the makers mark it looks like its been hand done. Rather shabby job at that too. The pin looks ok but the catch is not the usual I have seen on WS marked piece. Maybe the pin was replaced at some stage? As for the picture of the front it is too dark to really make a good judgement. So I am not sure on this one for reference.

Here is another piece from Ken's site, this one I like allot more. The mark looks correct, the stamped type.

I also like the pin, it is identical to the piece I am looking at buying. The front is also identical.

                  Thoughts?

                    Hi Dez,

Both pieces are perfectly good examples of Wagner 1914 EK1s. Sorry for not posting examples in a timely fashion so that you may compare-- in time, I will do so. I think that I MIGHT even have yet another version to share!

Don't sell the first version too short-- notice the oval backing plate behind the hinge-- extra care was taken in the manufacture of this item. I have several of these-one is marked 900--and it is my theory that they were a step up from the average incuse marked versions sans the backing plates! Remember: EK's were made and marked by hand, which may account for your scepticism regarding the hallmark.

Hope this helps a bit-more will follow!

Here are images of a Wagner & Sohn EK1. This cross is identical to the first one posted above. It has the oval backing plate on the hinge and has the same style catch. It also has a very similar engraved "WS" marking to the right of the catch. The only thing wrong with this EK is the slight bend to the pin - I guess this could be attributed to wear by the original owner.

Eric, thanks I feel much more confidant now in ID’ing this particular maker’s pieces. Perhaps Wagner & Sohn started off with the hand engraving and later moved to using the stamp tool for their name? Brian you have a very nice cross there, is the case original to the EK?
