I wanted to share a recent acquisition obtained at the TMCA show in Franklin TN a couple weeks ago. This nice group came from the grandson of SGT Bernhard Schultheis who served in Hussar-Regiment King Humbert v. Italy (1. Kurhessian) Nr. 13. The group consists of a color portrait, medal bar with award documents including the EKII (2 JUL 1916), his regimental stein, a 50th birthday (1942) presentation portrait of v. Mackensen from the Kavallerie Kamradeschaft, , several pictures and postcards showing Schultheis in uniform and on horse and at the front, his war record document, veterans memorabilia including the Kyffhauser Bund pin in box, the Deutsche Feld Ehrenzeichen, reunion programs (1939, 1963), his named TR police visor cap, 25 year police long service medal and document, police boots, his Berlin police ID including his fingerprint card, Red Cross documents and other memorabilia. There is also a picture postcard of his younger brother’s grave (KIA July 1918, 2.MGK RIR 251).
Sergant Bernhard Schultheis was born in 1892 in Amoeneberg, Hesse. He enlisted 2 OCT 12 and was promoted to SGT 10 April 18. His service included; 1914 (West) Battle of Longwy, Maas, Bailleul, Lille; (East) Kuton, Lodz, Breszyinie; 1915 Rawka-Pzura, Prasznysz, Ostpruessen; 1916 Jakobsstadt; 1917 Riga, Dina, Kreuzberg u. Kokenhusen; 1918 Lif u. Estland, (West) Vogesen, Oberelsass, Flandern, Siegfriedfront, Camprai u. St. Quentin, Flandern, Lys u. Schelde, March home. On 15 May 1917 the 13 Hussar Rgt lost their horses and were transferred to the 129 IR.
After the war Schultheis became a police officer in Marburg, Hesse. He was awarded the 25 year police long service medal in gold in 1939. The document has a facsimile of Hitler’s signature. In April 1945 Schultheis was capture by US forces and spent two years in captivity at Camp Butner, NC. Unfortunately, his grandson has no information as to the circumstances of his grandfathers capture. Schultheis’ daughter married a GI in 1948 and is the reason for his items being in the US. SGT Schultheis died in 1964, age 72, after being struck by a car.
