I am trying to find which flying units a Saxon Air Service Oberserver Officer named Johannes Zichäus served with during WWI . I have his WWII Soldbuch and Wehrpaß that list his WWI awards, but unfortunately none of hs flying units. I do know he was an Beobachter and served on the Western Front from 1914-16, Ost Front 1917, and Western Front 1918. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Could it be that your guy published a military law book? A man with the same name published this book:

Thank you for the information and link Gerdan. I think that is probably him. After WWI he was a Dr. zur Rechskamwalt. With the passbooks came an 1944 oil cloth Ausweis für den Rechsanwalt u. Notar.
Could find nothing on him in the series of books I have from the Aviation Awards of Imerpeial Germany series. I do have an original 1926 published book, 1914-18 Ehren-Rangliste des ehemaligen Deutschen Heers listing all the various officers from each state. However, I cannnot find a Zichaus listed there either. I was able to find a Zichau attached to IR 102 at Zittau, but nothing else.
During WWI he did recieve the following awards; EK II, A.R. II. Kl.m.Schw, Fl. Beobachter Abz., EK I, V.R. II. Kl,.m.Schw., and Verwundet Abz. Schwarz.
So he was decorated for his time with the Air Service. Just have to find out if any documentation exists that would tell me the Air units he served with.

That's not really a military law book. That was his doctoral thesis from the University of Leipzig.
This Johannes Zichäus was born on 21 June 1891 in Chemnitz. After graduating from the Städtische Realgymnasium Chemnitz in 1911, he studied at Jena and Leipzig until the war. After the war he finished his studies and received his Dr.jur. in October 1919.
The aviator Johannes Zichäus, born in Chemnitz, was lightly wounded in December 1914 or January 1915 as an Unteroffizier in 5. Komp., Royal Saxon Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 244. No idea when he was commissioned or when he went to the Fliegertruppen. When he received his SA3bX on 17 December 1916, he was a Lt.d.R. still in RIR 244. When he received his SV3bX on 2 December 1917, he was in Flieger-Abteilung Nr. 221.
Same uncommon name and birthplace, so presumably the same guy. Do his Soldbuch and Wehrpaß have the Dr. jur. and match the birthdate?

As a Lt.d.R., he would not have been in the Ehren-Rangliste, which only covers active officers.

Hi Dave, first thank you very much for providing the information.
Yes, the dates of birth are exact. I should have posted that as well. The Soldbuch pic has him wearing all his awards including the WWI Beob. Abz. and ribbon bar showing the Saxon State awards. He served throughout WWII. For an older vet from the previous conflict he was still serving towards wars end with various units including 30 Jadg Div, and Jafü OstPrußen.
