I would put it another way..... Wernitz is essential. His 2 volumes cover all the history of the crosses in great detail, the variations of 1813 and 1870 in detail... and an introduction to 1914....

For the project in the works, although there was an "oh sht" moment when we heard about Wernitz, when I finally got it I thought "fantastic!"

Our intention was never to really cover the History... It is great that Wernitz did. For the variations volume... it is great that 1813-1870 are handeled in such detail... and the 1914 part is a great introduction.... by a huge coincidence, the projects complement each other.

We are taking the 1914, don't have to spend time on the history (Wernitz did it for us ... and we go from there.

Projection is about 1200 pages just on crosses, documents, and Photos, and I think with Wernitz and the 1914 project, on the bookshelf, there will be little more to add.

So... basically, i cannot recommend Wernitz enough... it is must have! :-)

So, of course I bought it in German language and it's probably going to take until WW4 or 5 before I can finish it with my German skills...

If someone wants to buy my Ger -version with 160 eur including shipping (3-7 days) in EU-area, PM me. Paypal fees on buyer, but bank transfer is of course also ok. Both volumes in perfect condition still, have browsed through them only couple of time so far.

If I was not skinnt, i would put a second set aside.

Now that the hype and first impressions have worn off and people have had a chance to really look at this set ... is it still worth the $$?

Any other errors or issues that stand out or reflect on the overall value?

I wouldn't be without it, although it's not a collector's guide so much as a history.

Vol I is amazing and by far the best work on the history of the Iron Cross. A ton of great information and images in there! Really superb, a world-class book.

Vol II was co-written with Volker Simons, who is supposed to be the expert in classification. Simons tries to categorize and name different core and cross types, but the final product is amateurish in the extreme. Tons of great, known types are missing all together, a few fakes are shown as originals, and anything not marked is called an "unknown maker." Simons is light-years (actually c. ten years) behind us here on the forum.

I still have not spent the money for a copy.
I was really turned off by how when this book came out that everyone decided
that his assumptions on the makers of some crosses were absolute facts.

I get a little alarmed by Trevor's thoughts on the second volume. For the money it still commands ... I prefer two volumes of value not one.

I am absolutely pleased Trevor speaks so openly about the downsides of the book .

Greg's turn of on the book was also my turn off as well ..


What troubles me is the rumour and promise of new revelations that came with the book ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

file's where looked in in old DDR stock who should revolutionise the whole collector world ...

so far no one.. who got the book,,,, came forward to share ???????

Warts and all, these books are still a worthwhile addition to the library of a student of the Iron Cross.
