Unusual POW souvenir - Stobs Camp Scotland 1915-1916

    Hello everyone,

I wanted to share some pictures of a very unusual souvenir of a German POW.

There is a small paper inside the bottle saying: "Zur Erinnerung an meine Kriegsgefangenschaft 1915 Stobs Schottland 1916" ("To remember my time as a POW in 1915 Stobs Scotland 1916") This German POW must have been arrested in the Stobs Camp in Scotland (near Northumberland National Park).

The structure of the glass makes it hard to see anything on the picture. There is a German sailor inside, houses, trees and a light house.

Has anyone seen another bottle like this before?

    Thanks
    Klaus

Even without the pow history, that is Absolutely amazing.

In Germany near the Northern Sea you often find such bottles called "Buddelschiff":

There is a ship inside and often part of the harbour or the landscape.

An old friend of mine had 3 small medical vials that were tiny ships in a bottle. They came from the Kingston Ontario area. During the war pows were held at Old Fort York. From what we discovered about these tiny ships in a bottle was the POWS would make them and then sell them for money to buy tobacco and sundries. These vials measured about 5/8th in diameter. They were the single dose vials that you napped off the top and extracted the contents with a syringe. Along with the tiny ships there were background scenes of Kingston harbour and the old fort. The ships and scenery were made of bits of cork and cigarette paper for sails

Made by an FJR taken prisoner just after Cassino 1944/45. He was a toy maker by trade.

Every building has names and dates on them. Amazing attention to detail.

I love the trains, railway tracks and various smoke coming out of the chimneys. Plus the crane with load, ,

              Chris

p.s. not a big bottle, it is only a half litre to 750ml not even a full litre size.

The name on the sailing ship is "Move" with a " above the O. Might mean something ?

The boat in these images is called "Cobra". Was there such a German ship ?

Notice the light above the door of the "Rote Laterne". There are even lights on the masts of the boats/ ships.

You can just see the stock wagons with loads on the railway tracks.
