    What are these ?

I recently picked up a small lot of Imperial stuff (not my specialty) can anyone tell me what these are and their respective values ? The smaller badge has a "25" at the bottom and looks like the wreath had black paint on it at one time. On the medal there is a makers name above the wreath on the reverse "Grienauer" Thanks in advance.

The badge is the Hesse Krieger-Ehrenzeichen. Someone will be able to confirm authenticity.

The medal is an Austrian 1914-1918 Commemorative Medal and is a nice original.

      Kind regards

Can we get more images of the Hessen badge? Especially pin, hinge etc. They are faked but at first glance this one looks okay though displaying much more wear than I have seen on others. There are quite a lot of variations of this badge, more than you might expect.

        The condition bothers me.

The condition doesn't really bother me, at least in terms of originality. I would prefer a better-preserved example for a collection, though.

The crown and cipher part should be made of zinc, so it should show typical zinc oxidation. The wreath was blackened iron, so the blackening often wears off and since iron is soft, the sharper details will wear. It should be magnetic - that's probably your first test.

The pin looks like the standard straight pin (various "coke bottle" pins are also seen, but many of these are 1920s-1940s made). The catch on wartime models was usually a curved piece of flat metal, not round metal like here, but in the catalog of variants I had on my late, lamented website there were several examples with a round brass catch.

A nice, though heavily worn piece.

              Hessen Badge

Here are some more pics. The wreath is magnetic. I appreciate the I.D. on this but can anyone give me an estimate on value ? assuming it is original.

Yeah this one is really rough, best not buy it, and pass, then tell US where its at .(hahahah) Man.....you don't find these all that often, you best snag it seriously and not worry about the condition, as condition in such scarce badges isn't really as big an issue as finding one that can really be original.... till you can upgrade it , which likely may be never...and as soon as you buy it , you'll see what I'm talkin bout ,for many here will likely be trying to buy this one from you if you do purchase it and bug the crapola out of you constantly through next year about it .

Not really that rare. If I remember correctly, every Hessian who earned the EK1 got one of these as well. Still, it is an issue piece. Ones in good shape go for 120-150e on German ebay.

                          and ?

                          it was called bloody ludwig.

you had to earn ek2, ek1 and wound badge in black OR HIGHER grades.

the long hessian collector dr. walter rosenwald ( ex ss-untersturmführer), a member of the german dgo. said that they were only ~ 2000 - 3000 times awarded!
